Lamport Hall and Gardens

Lamport Hall and Gardens

The original Tudor manor was built by John Isham, a successful wool merchant, in 1568. Lamport Hall is now best known for its classical frontage, which was started by John Webb in 1655 and completed in the eighteenth century, to the design of Francis Smith of Warwick. It contains a wealth of outstanding furniture, books, china and paintings, many of which were brought back by the third Baronet's Grand Tour of Europe in the 1670s.

Sir Charles Isham had a love of gardening. He is responsible for the present appearance of the garden, with a small Italian garden and the remarkable rock garden rising like a ruin at 24' tall. In the time of Sir Charles this was peopled by small figures, undoubtedly the first garden gnomes in England. The Privy garden was opened in 2002.

The Hall remained in the Isham family for over 400 years, until Sir Gyles Isham, the 12th Baronet, died in 1976. In his Will he bequeathed the Hall, with its contents and estate to the Lamport Hall Preservation Trust.

Lamport Hall is ideally situated in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside, only a short drive from the motorway network and A14.
