Melford Hall (National Trust)


Melford Hall was built between 1554 and 1578 by William Cordell. The home of the Hyde Parker family since 1786, Queen Elizabeth I was entertained here in 1578. Beatrix Potter was a cousin of the family and often visted the hall between 1900 and 1938, painting many rooms, objects and views of the garden. There is a display of memorabillia associated with her visits, incuding a toy duck dressed as Jemima Puddle-Duck that she gave to the family. The hall has Regency, Georgian and Victorian interiors with fine collections of maritime related paintings, furniture and porcelain. The garden is laid out in an Edwardian style and has many specimen trees. The Banqueting House is a rare and beautiful example of Tudor architecture and is thought to have played a central part in the entertainments surrounding the 1578 royal visit. There is also a pleasant mile long walk in the park that offers lovely views back towards the house.
