Shaftesbury Abbey Museum & Garden

Voted SW Tourism Excellence Awards Silver Best Small Visitor Attraction 2007/2008, this award-winning Shaftesbury Abbey Museum and Garden on Park Walk tells the story of this important Abbey from its’ early beginnings through to the Abbeys’ abrupt end in 1539 when it was destroyed on the orders of Henry V111. Within a few years the Abbey was all but forgotten. Excavations on the site in 1931 saw the chance discovery of a casket of bones, identified as the possible relics of St. Edward the Martyr, the murdered boy king, and with this came renewed interest in the Abbey and its’ history. Start your journey inside this state of the art museum experiencing the interactive virtual tour, touching relics and be guided by a fascinating audio tour, and then continue to wander outside though the foundations of the Abbey Church and sample the unique aromas of the Anglo-Saxon herb collection in the peaceful walled garden. There is also a quiz for children to do as part of their visit. You can finish your tour by visiting the Museum shop where you will find a selection of interesting books, unique gifts for all ages and lovely cards.
