Stonor Park
Stonor is the home of Lord and Lady Camoys. The earliest part of the building dates from 1100 but most of the house was built in the 14th Century. In Tudor times, red brick was used to conceal the earlier builds and to produce a uniform facade and during the 18 century, the windows and roof were remodelled to give the house is Georgian appearance. To the rear of the house there are walled south-facing gardens with fine views over an extensive deer park, and also in the grounds is a reconstruction of a pagan stone circle that once stood on the site.
The well portioned rooms show strong 18th century Gothic decoration. The maginificently vaulted 17th century library contains an important collection of recusant literature, and notable sculpture.
The main public rooms hold fine furniture, family portraits, bronzes, silhouettes, Italian pictures and drawings and a growing collection of contemporary ceramics.
Next to the house is the family chapel, built of flint and stone, where Mass has been celebrated continuously since 1349 and it was even used during the Reformation.
Stonor was a sanctuary to Father Edmund Campion who lost his life for his faith in 1581 and an exhibition depicting his life and work is shown in the room alongside the priest hole.
The house is open on Sundays from 23 March - 14 September 2008.
