Stourhead House and Gardens
Often referred to as “Paradise”, Stourhead is an exquisite example of an English landscape garden. It was once described by Horace Walpole as ‘one of the most picturesque scenes in the world’.
Visitors can discover the inspiration behind Henry Hoare II’s world famous garden, laid out between 1741 and 1780, and enjoy breathtaking views all year round.
The garden is dotted with Classical temples including the Pantheon and the Temple of Apollo, which provide dramatic backdrops to the majestic lake, secluded valley and mature woodland replete with exotic trees.
Stourhead House is an 18th century Palladian Mansion home to the beautifully restored Pope’s Cabinet, furniture by the younger Chippendale and a magnificent collection of paintings. It is situated at the top of the gardens surrounded by lawns and parkland.
The Stourhead Estate extends east to King Alfred’s Tower, a triangular folly 2 1/2 miles from the House which affords stunning views across three counties, and is the perfect place for picnics.
Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking walks across Whitesheet Hill’s chalk downs, and explore open countryside where native wildlife including woodland birds, badgers, deer and wildflowers can be seen.
The Restaurant offers fresh new flavours and local produce, there is an extensive Gift Shop and Plant Centre, and there are many opportunities to get involved with Stourhead’s exciting Events Programme.
