Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum
Westonzoyland's Grade2* listed pumping station dates from 1830 and is now the sole survivor on the Somerset Levels with an intact and working Victorian floodwater pumping engine. Also on site is a large collection of steam-powered pumps and machines, representing some of the region's industrial past. Many of these are operational and the museum holds special "in-steam" days throughout the main tourist season.
The site has a small tearoom for drinks and simple snacks; a bookshop selling a variety of "niche" local history and more general publications; and free parking field, with a picnic/outdoor tables area, in the adjacent shrubbery.
Although the major part of the pumping station is not open to visitors, the engine-house and side-buildings are, plus the grounds and main exhibition hall. The immediate environment is rural, with open moorland and typical Levels wildlife.
The museum lies close to the general route of the River Parrett Trail, popular with cyclists and walkers.
The museum is open every Sunday throughout the year, from 2pm till 5pm; and when in-steam from 1pm till 5pm. It is run totally by volunteers, who form the Westonzoyland Engine Trust, a registered charity.
